Expert/Specialist Qualifications - Board Certification

According to Justice Harry Lee Anstead, Certification by the Florida Bar Association should be the capstone for a lawyer's professionalism goals. Moreover, certification by the Florida Bar Association is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of competency and experience within an area of law, and professionalism and ethics in practice. Specialist or Expert designation is reserved only for Certified lawyers-Certified Florida attorneys are the only Florida lawyers allowed to identify themselves as specialists or experts. Board Certification evaluates an attorneys' special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law, professionalism and ethics in practice. Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in areas of law approved for Certification by the Supreme Court of Florida.

Recertification is required every 5 years-Board Certification is valid for five years. During that time, attorneys must continue to practice law and attend Florida Bar-approved continuing legal education courses. Recertification requirements are similar to those for initial certification. Not all qualified lawyers are certified, but those who are Board Certified have taken the extra steps to have their competence and experience evaluated.
